Spring 2015 Interview – Char (Oolong Owl)

Oolong Owl

Q1. What is your name?

Q2. What is the name of your blog or organisation?

Oolong Owl

Q3. Where are you located in the world?

Long Beach, California USA

Q4. What currently is your favourite drink and why?

I’m a tea blogger, so my drink of choice is tea!

Right now I’m addicted to Pu’er Tea Nuggets (Lao Cha Tou). They aren’t very attractive – if you don’t’ wanna google it, they look like big chunky jagged dark tea lumps. However, this tea is rich, creamy smooth ripe pu’er that is bombproof and can be resteeped about 20 times!

Then a trick I learned from White2Tea is after you’ve had your 20 infusions is to take the chunks and boiled it on the stove for 15+ minutes for one last cup. The result is a nicely thick toasty roasty flavored tea. In the end, a really cost effective tea!

Q5. Do you change your drinking habits during Spring?

I generally change my habits to drink more 2015 fresh teas, like more whites and greens and start getting into the habit of cold brewing for summer.

This year I’ve been really slow at it the shift. It’s been oddly cooler (and drier!) than usual here in Southern California and I got so much tea in my stash already (581 last count, yikes!) so I haven’t been buying the newest harvests. I’m still obsessed with dark roasty flavors. I did recently buy a sweet cold brew bottle that changes colors – usually some neat tea ware will start to get me into the mood!

Q6. Is there a coffee or tea you think others should try?

Right now it seems everyone is in a Matcha craze. Matcha is awesome, I drink it all the time before I work out, but be sure to know you are getting actual good quality matcha from a reliable source.

But hey – after that matcha craze, drink some pu’er and oolong, yo. Pu’er and oolong is the stuff!

Q7. If cost wasn’t a factor, where would you like to be right now enjoying a drink?

Right now I am dying – DYING – to be on a cruise vacation again. I went to Hawaii last year and Mexico the year before that. I really want to go to Alaska this year – I love cruising and love afternoon tea on the Princess cruise ships. Beam me in right now, 3pm afternoon tea time on a boat sailing through Glacier bay. Solo window seat, a couple mini shrimp sandwiches, cream puffs shaped like swans and a creamy golden needle black tea. My tablemate will be one of my crochet Tea Owls, who will be eating cookies and trying to hide from the old ladies that like to grab them on cruise ships.

Fingers crossed – late this summer I’m on a boat.

Q8. What do you think should be done to stop people from drinking too much alcohol?

I could be the most long winded or serious person to ask this question out of the tea bloggers as my previous job I was a drug and alcohol mental health counsellor.

To give more of a light answer, tea can be an excellent social event – gather round the tea table with some gaiwans and compare different teas. Or chow down on sweets, pairing them with tea. You don’t need to drink booze to have a good time, nor one should feel expected to drink in order to socialize or fit your age norm.

Finally, Google “tea drunk” or “cha qi”. Drink a whole bunch of oolong or pu’er and you’ll feel kinda crazy, without the alcohol calories.

Q9. Where can people find out more about you?

My tea blog is Oolong Owl – http://oolongowl.com

I am also very active on Instagram as I love taking photos of tea and my crochet creations – https://instagram.com/oolongowl/
